Things went horribly wrong. It was a real mess. We tried to {compensate|handle the situation, but it was like trying to stop a blizzard with a teaspoon. We're still picking up the pieces and feeling the sting of this unmitigated catastrophe.

This crisis has spiraled out of control. It's a total disaster. We've tried everything to fix it, but nothing seems to function. At this point, it feels like we're toast. Honestly, I don't know what else to do. This is a train wreck of epic proportions.
That's So Cringe, It's Hilarious (In a Way)
Sometimes you find yourself face-to-face with situations so terrible that you can't help but smile. It's like your brain tries to make sense of the sheer level of chaos and just throws its hands up, opting for laughter as a coping mechanism.
But then, you suddenly become aware that it's not really funny. It's just plain terrible. And the laughter you were experiencing morphs into a wistful, melancholic sound.
After all is said and done, you are left with a sense of utter perplexity. You wonder about the purpose of it all. Was this a joke?
Or were we just all part of a grand, cosmic prank?

Worst Day Ever
It all started with a terrible case of terrible hair. I couldn't do it to look right. As I was dashing out the door, I trippedover and spilled all over my new shoes. To make matters worse, I was totally behind schedule for work.
I flustered. My {boss|friend|was absolutely furious. I attempted to explain, but it was pointless.
The rest of the day was even worse. seemed to conspire against me. I get anything done.
By the time I got home, I was utterly defeated. This day, this terrible day will be forever remembered as the worst day ever.
Things Went From Bad to Absolutely Terrible
It all started out read more terribly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then it went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to run away and hide.
